The Not So Secret American Society of Magazine Editors

In 1963, a group of individuals banded together to create a society with the purpose of upholding journalism. They called themselves the American Society of Magazine Editors and from thence forward, like valiant vigilantes, promised to safeguard the foundation principles of the First Amendment.

Their membership was confined early on to the editorial leaders of magazines and later expanded to include websites. 50 years later, directors come from various fields, including art and photography, and are broken into four main categories of membership: Chief Editor, Senior Editor, Associate Member, and ASME NEXT. To become a member, you are required to submit an application to the Board of Directors for approval. There are currently 400 active members in the society.

The society is ran by a board of directors, comprised of a total of 16 men and women. Each director must be elected to their position and generally serves a two-year term. If they choose to run for re-election, they can serve an additional two-year term, but are limited to four years as a director. If a member wants to be involved and not bear the weight of responsibility that a director position entails, they have the option to run for an officer position. As an officer, they serve a one-year term and can be re-elected for a second one-year term. Board elections are a yearly occurrence that take place over the course of the month of May.

ASME takes pride in the art of journalism and works to promote and uphold the legacy and honor that comes with composition. In order to do this, they sponsor programs like the Ellie Awards, the National Magazine Awards, the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30, the Magazine Editors' Hall of Fame, the Osborn Elliot Scholarship, and many more.

Yes, joining an exclusive society sounds cool in conversation or on paper, but it is much more than a resume filler or email chain subscription. ASME gives it members belonging within their thriving and competitive field of work. It also gives them savings on the entry fees for the National Magazine Awards, ASME Best Cover Contest, and the ASME Innovation Awards. Members also receive a network of passionate and successful writers that can help them continue to expand their portfolios and carry on the legacy of the craft they so dearly love.
